In February 1935, 197 young hopefuls arrived at
RAF Cranwell as the 9J12 and 9M12 (35th) Entry to train as Instrument
Makers (9J12) or Wireless Operator Mechanics or Wireless Electrical
Mechanics (9M12). Because of the shortage of skilled
tradesmen to meet the war requirements, the course length was reduced
from 3 to 2 and 3/4 years and the Entry was renumbered as the 9J9 / 9M9
(35th) Entry. During
their training they gained 13 from Senior Entries, 20 ceased
training, while 12 of their number were re-classed to later Entries,
leaving 178 to pass out in September 1939.
