1921

Born Liverpool 3rd December, Liverpool Institute scholar and Liverpool Cathedral chorister. Wireless became my hobby, hence, when I heard that the RAF needed more apprentices in 1937, set forth with many others via Euston, Marylebone and Wendover for Halton.
 

1937 - 40

Block 326, B Squadron (green hatbands) under Sam Hellier and F.Sgt Booth - also recall Stonker Daley and Geordie Stevenson.
 

1940

30 MU Sealand ( a founder member of the AERS)
 

1940 - 41

Back to Cranwell and Compton Bassett - instructor.
 

1942 - 43

Northern Ireland - 153 Sqdn (Defiants) and 96 WOW.
 

1943 - 45

Attached Inter Services Research Bureau - better known as Special Operations Executive - various places - Welwyn(The Frith), Watford and also at RAF Tempsford.
 

1945

At last - overseas to India to join Force 136 (SOE's equivalent). The to "B" Group Mount Lavinia, Colombo. Finally came to rest at Minneriya, after a spell at Sigiriya. Celebrated VE Day in Colombo, followed by VJ Day soon afterwards. Then to the Sunderland base at Koggola.
 

1946 - 47

OWC39 at Cranwell - commissioned June '47 after Cosford !!    Short spell at TME Ismailia (codes and cyphers).  Then to RAF Delegation Greece and finally home to UK in February 1948.
 

1948

HQ 46 Group Bushey Hall. Next stop Berlin Airlift at Buckeburg and later Luneburg.
 

1949 - 51

RAF Eindhoven Reserve Radio Vehicles Park.
 

1951 - 57

RAF Yatesbury - Course Officer, OC Training Workshops and finally Trade Standards and Testing Officer.
 

1957 - 60

Signal Centre Ceylon.
 

1961 - 64

Training 1 at Locking, then Senior Trade and Management and part time Secretary and Treasurer RAF Amateur Radio Society.
 

1964 - 65

OC South East Comms Centre Uxbridge.
 

1965 - 67

HQAFME Staff - Tels 1B
 

1967 - 69

OC RAF Newmarket (Eastern Comms Centre).
 

1969 - 71

HQFEAF Staff EE1C.
 

1971 - 76

OC RAF Boddington (now 9SU). Retired 3 Dec 1976.
 

1979 - 84

Messrs Dowty Electrics (Methods Engineer). Also became parish councillor. Borough councillor 1987 - 1991.
 

1991

Joined Gloucestershire Aviation Collection to assist in the foundation of an aviation museum. Not very successful, we are still looking.
 

Married Joan in June 1947, who unfortunately died in 1988.

Married Sheila on 1 December 1989.  One son from first marriage, now 52, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Greg aged 4 and Megan 4 months.
