In February 1939, some 240 young hopefuls arrived at
RAF Cranwell as the 1J12 and 1M12 (39th) Entry to train as Instrument
Makers (1J12), Wireless Operator Mechanic or Wireless Electrical
Mechanics (1M12). Because of the shortage of skilled
tradesmen to meet the war requirements, the course length was reduced
from 3 to 2 years and the Entry was renumbered as the 1J1 / 1M1
(39th) Entry. The Instrument Makers course was reduced
even further and was now known as the 0J10 Entry and transferred to
RAF Halton in August 1940 to complete their training where they
passed out in October 1940. The 1M1
Entry passed out from Cranwell in January
1941.
