In September 1939, 422 young hopefuls arrived at
RAF Cranwell as the 1J9 and 1M9 (40th) Entry to train as Instrument
Makers (1J9) or Wireless Operator Mechanics or Wireless Electrical
Mechanics (1M9). The Instrument Fitters all transferred
to RAF Halton in August 1940 to complete their training, but because
of the shortage of Instrument Fitters, their course length was further
reduced and they were retitled the 1J6 (40th) Entry passing out on 18th June 1941.
The Cranwell 1M9's Passed Out in September 1941. During
their training the Entry gained 26 from Senior Entries, while 49 of their number were re-classed to later Entries.
In 1989 Tom Olliver (36th Entry) arranged a "nostalgia"
visit to RAF Cranwell for the September. As this would
be almost 50 years since the 1M9/1J9's started at Cranwell, it was
an occasion not to be missed. Thus ten members of that
Entry, with their ladies, stayed the weekend at a hotel in Grantham
and joined the Cranwell party. The get-together was
such a resounding success that ever since further reunions have
followed. At each RAFCAA AGM we have stayed the weekend
at a hotel in the vicinity of the venue, and each Springtime at
various places such as Ironbridge, Bournemouth, York and Ross-on-Wye
etc.
Over a number of years close contact was kept with
our compatriots of the Halton 40th Entry Association. This
culminated in September 1999 with a 60th anniversary dinner in Cannock
when the Halton 40th Association disbanded - the Cranwell 1M9's
(40th) continues.
The 1M9's lay claim to being the first, and longest
running, of the RAFCAA Associations.
