INTRODUCTION
The following is a brief statistical summary of
the 1M1 (58th) Entry from establishment at RAF Cranwell in 1948
up to the present day. It is based on the information
presented in the following Entry Listing. Having worked
closely with our Halton contemporaries, with whom there has been
a very successful combined 58th Entry Association for the past ten
years, and using service numbers as the definitive baseline, all
original members plus those of other entries who completed their
training with the 58th are included. Those of other
entries who only transited via the 58th to later entries are identified
but not included in the summary. Thanks are due to the
RAF Records Office for helping to resolve anomalies in other source
records and in providing details on those who ceased training.
SUMMARY
On the 4th February 1948 the 1M1 (58th) Entry was
formed at RAF Cranwell to train as either Air or Ground Radio Fitters.
The initial entry strength of 77 was comprised of 72
lads attested at RAF North Weald on 22nd and 23rd January and transferred
via RAF Halton, and 5 ex-Boy Entrants. This initial strength
was unaffected when, within the first few weeks, an exchange of
two individuals between Cranwell and Halton took place.
During the 3 years of training, of the original
77, 2 re-mustered to airman service, 8 were discharged, and 13 were
re-classed to later entries leaving 54 to take finals, of whom 50
graduated as Junior Technicians and 4 as Mechanics. Of
the 13 re-classed, 9 graduated as Junior Technicians, 1 died before
completion of training and 3 were discharged.
Six members of the 57th Entry completed their training
with the 58th Entry with 2 graduating as Junior Technicians and
4 as Mechanics. Thus on 1st February 1951 a total of
52 Junior Technicians passed out from Cranwell with the 58th Entry,
the first to do so under the new 1951 Trade Structure.
As of 19th March 2009, of the original 77, 19 are
known to be deceased, 37 are contactable, leaving the where-about's
of the remaining 22 unknown. Comparable figures for
the 6 from the 57th Entry who completed their training with the
58th Entry are: 2 deceased, 2 contactable and 2 unaccounted for.
In my capacity as the Entry Rep I have only been
able to compile this Record and Summary with the support, via inputs
and corrections to my previous endeavours, from many, both in the
Entry and in the wider RAF Apprentice fraternity. There
are too many to mention individually but to all of them I offer
my heartfelt thanks. As in the past I ask that anyone who
studies the record and either notes a mistake or can provide additional
information, particularly on those of the Entry with whom contact
has yet to be made, please do not hesitate to let me know.
